About the debate

About this debate: Roads with no traffic

We believe hybrid cars could have a profound impact on global society, leading to significant shifts in lifestyle and generational behaviour.

Hybrid cars are not like other cars.

The widespread acceptance of hybrid cars could change our society and environment beyond recognition. A major green victory, it has the potential to boost investment and development of clean technologies while putting old energy under threat. The knockdown effect of this could be some serious geopolitical shifts regarding our reliance upon the Middle East. The proliferation of hybrid cars could have an astonishing impact on urban design, and cleaner roads would certainly lead to a reduction in hearing and respiratory disease.

Is the world ready for these changes? Hybrid cars may be an evolutionary step up in automotive technology, but it is not good enough to simply compare them to the traditional concept of cars. We want to encourage an informed analysis and public debate amongst the advocates and the sceptics of the new technology.

We've enlisted a panel of experts to give us their advice and opinions on various aspects of the hybrid debate. The debate will be left open to the blogging community, generating an open and honest discussion among the wider public.
