As you'll see from their posts on The Hybrid Debate, all of our specialist contributors have interpreted their brief in a slightly different way.
For example: environmentalist Joanna Yarrow argues that while greater hybrid car usage will encourage greater sustainable living in other areas, it may also encourage more an unsustainable level of driving; architect Neil Spiller foresees green swards running through major cities, with urban populations eager to reclaim the streets; energy blogger Chris Vernon questions how quickly the hybrid car can realistically proliferate, but predicts that the UK economy will benefit dramatically from reduced oil dependency; business futurist Richard Scase says an "iPod of the hybrid space" could lead to explosive up-take, but points out that the dominant energy suppliers of today will remain in power; and transport expert Roger Kemp says certain types of hybrid could be beneficial in certain instances, but warns that we need to look beyond our scarce reserves of lithium-ion.Finally, Sir Bob Geldof - a hybrid driver, as well as an expert on geopolitics - shares his thoughts on why the UK must embrace nuclear power, why we can't deny developing countries the emancipating influence of the car, and why the congestion charge is a grotesque - but possible necessary - infringement of our liberties.
